I am…probably overthinking this because I am so surprised to be chosen for this.

I like…learning new things, watching Netflix and reading a good book.

I dislike… well…I am not going to tell you because in my experience it usually results in my dislikes being used against me.

I eat…what I want as long as Mitch approves.

I will…be going back to school within the next couple of months, which I am absolutely terrified and excited for.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…
I recently graduated from UD and while I have been trying to figure out the next step in my life, I have been working in a lab doing chemical testing.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?
I had been interested in starting crossfit for a few years but was never brave enough to start. So my mom found an advertisement for the New You Challenge – which I had no desire to join – but my mom wanted to give it a chance and I joined it with her so she would not have to do it alone. Needless to say, I am hooked and have not looked back.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?
I didn’t know I had a goal of doing a handstand, until Spencer made me try it one class – now all I want to do is do handstands.
My current goals are to be able to do a strict pull-up and gain more confidence in overhead movements.

What is your favorite movement?
The clean – for sure, but I also like a lot of the weightlifting movements.

What is your least favorite movement?
Anything I am not good at, but particularly BURPEES. I am not graceful enough to fling myself onto the ground and get back up again quickly – though I am getting better.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?
I don’t really have a favorite quote or words to live by, but I hear this very frequently — Consistency is key.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?
Just do it, you will not regret it.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?
I love the community and the support system that is found at Centerville Crossfit. Everyone wants each other to succeed and they push you to reach your fullest potential and go further.

I am…. always late to the gym
I like… coffee, SQUATS, mimosas
I dislike… the triple jump
I eat… all the donut cake
I will… work hard

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?
I used to work right by the gym and I would drive past CCF about 4 times/day and I was curious. I started with boot camp classes because I didn’t even understand what CrossFit was but a couple months later I started CF and have never looked back.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?
I have achieved so much physically and mentally in the last 6 years at CCF. I found confidence and strength and I realized that with hard work and consistency I could accomplish any goals I set for myself. I started from the bottom with all movements and I have accomplished most of them that I have put in the time to work on. After having a baby a year and a half ago I had to kind of start over again from the ground up in many ways, which has been humbling for me but mostly I battle with time and consistency and often I don’t feel like an “athlete.” But it has been incredible to see what my body can do in the gym before, during and after a pregnancy! My current goal is to stay consistent in the kitchen and the gym.

What is your favorite movement?
Thrusters. Duh.

What is your least favorite movement?
Running. It always reminds me just how much I hate running.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?
My favorite quote:“Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.” George S. Patton

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?
DO IT.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?
Everything. Walking in the door to CCF was honestly the best thing I have ever done.

I am….a meat head, who is good at picking things up and putting them back down.

I like…working out, eating, and sleeping. Everything else is just waiting to do those things.

I dislike…driving in the snow and having to do yardwork, luckily I only have to deal with one at time…and shirts!

I eat…pretty much everything. You don’t get to be this big by skipping meals. I try to eat healthy but occasionally my diet gets away from me.

I will…happily give assistance to anyone who asks for it.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

Originally from Los Angeles CA, I moved here when I was a young child. For the record, I am still a young child and I moved here like 5 years ago.   I played offensive line at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and now am a Captain in the Air Force and a Physicist by trade. Currently, I am working to get my PhD in applied physics at the Air Force Institute of Technology (like right now! I am filling this out at work.) I also coach high school football at Fairborn High School. Outside of my two jobs and the gym, there is not a whole lot of time but I usually spend it watching TV or playing games.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?

I was told there would be cake. But seriously, I miss the intensity and competition that I used to have every day while playing football. This does a decent job filling that void, like no other workout regime.

Centerville Crossfit is the best gym in the area, especially for those who want to play the sport of crossfit.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

I never thought I would be able to do muscle ups or handstand pushups and I am amazed every time I flip upside down and find that I can do them.

My current goal is to help the CCF team make regionals this season, that’s all I am focusing on!

What is your favorite movement?

Rowing, it’s one of the few movements where it helps to be tall

What is your least favorite movement?

Chest to bar pull-ups

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

“Perfection is the enemy of greatness.” No one is perfect, everyone is gonna make mistakes, that doesn’t stop you from being great.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

I think everyone will like Crossfit once they try it, so don’t be intimidated by the people you see on TV or Instagram, we think they are freaks too.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

Mitch Lyons’ famous hugs

Complete the sentence:

I am… ME, confident, strong, a wife, and a mother

I like… coffee, challenges, dark chocolate, all things pumpkin

I dislike… loud noises, crowded places, clutter and disorganization, being idle, and talking about myself

I eat… pretty healthy.

I will… eventually have that corner office!

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I have two awesome kids. You probably have met my son at one of the evening classes. My daughter plays soccer.   I have also been married for 15 years to Mike Conner.

I spent some time in the USAF as a B-52 crew chief and a maintenance coordinator, followed that with a brief stint in advertising and then as an emergency dispatcher. I am now a Program Manager and the Business Team Lead at the University of Dayton Research Institute.

I don’t really have a whole lot of hobbies outside of Crossfit. I enjoy reading and am getting ready to go back to school to get my MBA. I enjoy learning and challenging myself.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?

Before Crossfit, I had run multiple half marathons and one marathon, always looking to change it up, I did a Warrior Dash then decided to do a Tough Mudder. It was during training for the Tough Mudder in 2011 that I discovered Crossfit and found Centerville Crossfit was right around the corner.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

Double unders were my nemesis. It took me 2 painful years to string them together and now I can do 150ub.

A 200lb jerk would be pretty cool and being able to do muscle ups on ALL the rings, not just the ones off the rig.

What is your favorite movement?

Power Cleans, Jerks, double unders

What is your least favorite movement?

Burpees, thrusters, wall balls…..I can’t pick just one

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

My favorite words to live by are from the guy who used to stand at the corner of 48 and Alex-Bell on Mondays holding a motivational sign, they are“Those Who Risk – Win”. Another one of my favorites is “What is the worst that could happen?”

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

Just give it a chance. The beauty about Crossfit is that anyone can do it, no matter the age or capability.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

The coaches and the community are the best. I have met some awesome people and made some great friends at Centerville Crossfit.

I am… so glad I started doing CrossFit!

I like… wine and chocolate and traveling to places that have wine & chocolate (I see Italian wine and chocolate gelato in the near future). I like it when the coaches play music I’ve heard of.

I dislike… shopping. Losing weight this year has forced me to go shopping a lot and that’s not fun at all, but it’s fun wearing smaller sizes. I also dislike it when my kids don’t want to hear about what I did at my workout…but I tell them anyway.

I eat… anything I want on Friday and Saturday nights; having that to look forward to keeps me on track the rest of the week.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

My husband, Dave (just joined CCF), and I have 3 kids in their 20’s who all live in Columbus; the youngest attends OSU. I work at WPAFB.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

I was looking for something to do during the week that would also improve my health. Then last September a friend asked me to do the “New You Challenge”. I was very skeptical after I saw online what people do at CrossFit. I thought you had to be in good shape before starting CrossFit and I was too old, too out of shape, too overweight and thought I may get injured trying to do those things. I had an LA Fitness membership but I just couldn’t ever get motivated to go so I decided to try CrossFit.

What goals have you achieved?

I wanted to be able to do a sit-up, get up off the floor easier, and go up and down stairs easier…very basic things. I can easily do all those now. I got a lot stronger, lost 5.5% body fat and 24 pounds in the past 5 months (after “doing the food” part). My blood work #’s also improved a lot due to a good diet and exercise…without any medication.

What are your new ones?

I want to lose more body fat, deadlift my body weight and do a Double Under…just one…no need to overdo it!

What is your favorite movement?

Anything I’m doing now that I couldn’t do a year ago. I couldn’t jump rope, do a sit-up, box jump or a burpee. In recent workouts I did 120 sit-ups, jump roped 450 times, did lots of burpees and did my 1st box jump. So those are my favorite movements (except for the box jump).

What is your least favorite movement?

The bike & anything with the bar that you have to get your elbows up (mine won’t go up).

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

I don’t really have a favorite quote but here’s one I hear a lot: “Go home, eat a meal (not just a protein shake), drink plenty of water (not bourbon), and get plenty of sleep”.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

It doesn’t matter what your starting condition is or how old you are, you just start from wherever you are and get better. Yes, it’s hard. But if working hard just 3 hours a week makes every other hour in the week easier, then it’s definitely worth it. If you keep at it, you’ll see positive changes in all aspects of your life.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

I love the people, the coaches and learning new skills. I like how my coach encourages me to try new skills but also makes sure I’m not going to do anything to hurt myself. I like being around the positive, energetic people here and love how everyone is so supportive of each other no matter what your level is.

20170724_153805I am… the biggest dork you’ll ever meet.

I like… building computers, tinkering with mechanical stuff.

I dislike… the idea of jumping out of perfectly good planes. I won’t do it, I tell you!

I eat… better than I had before starting here!

I will… make you laugh at some point.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I’m pretty much the shiest person you’ll ever meet. However, once you do get to know me, you really can’t shut me up! Just ask my lovely husband. I’m one of the admins for a calibration company. For hobbies, I build computer rigs on the side. I also do a lot of graphic arts, drawing and sketching, writing, and in the spare time gaming and general life stuff.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

Actually, a friend of mine recommended to look into a CrossFit group in my area. I had broken my leg a couple years prior and was still having issues with it. I also had a lot of confidence issues. So, taking up on his advice, I decided to give it a look. I found several groups, but I came across Centerville CrossFit, and read up on them and decided to give it a try.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

One of the biggest goals I had beginning the program was to try to stop walking in pain and gain confidence back. Also wanted to gain some of the strength back I had when I used to play soccer. A year later and a lot of work and recommendations from the trainers I had, I’m pain free, walking with a bit more confidence, and still fail at juggling a soccer ball. But I guess I can kick it the length of the field again. : ) New goals are to continue getting better than I was yesterday, lose more weight, and maybe take over the world. Haven’t decided yet.

What is your favorite movement?

I have to pick one? Darn. Well, I guess if I ever say no to the deadlifting, I’m probably sick or something. Or someone’s put a clone in my place.

What is your least favorite movement?
I’m pretty sure if I say it out loud, my trainer is going to make me do it every day until it is no longer my least favorite.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

“Lighten up, just enjoy life, smile more, laugh more, and don’t get so worked up about things.”

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

Just do it! Even if you’re on the branch about it, or have maybe possibly considered it, then it’s worth trying.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

I honestly like the community. As someone who takes time to warm up around people, I feel as though I was welcomed quite a bit and encouraged to continue not just by the trainers, but by the individuals who’ve at least came up and gotten to know me better.

I am… totally surprised to be selected for this… I don’t really consider myself an “athlete”!!

I like… spending time with family, laying out in the sun (I know), playing with our dogs and watching the Bengals and UD play (and hopefully WIN!!)

I dislike… people who drive too fast, a dirty house and flying in a plane.

I eat… better than I ever have before! I do my best to follow the food plan, and feel a twinge of guilt when I stray off course.

I will… someday have a therapy dog and visit retirement homes and hospitals.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I have been married for 34 years to Ken, we have two great kids, Andrew and Jenn. When our kids were growing up I worked part time at Kettering Hospital (surgery scheduling) and later in two orthopedic surgeon’s offices. I was an avid volunteer at Centerville schools during those years doing everything from Market Day to selling soccer slides out of the trunk of my car for the cheerleaders. My sister had even gotten me a tee shirt that read, “Help! Stop me before I volunteer again!!” In 2009 my husband purchased the Arby’s/Lee’s on Far Hills and Whipp Rd. Five years later, in 2014, we had the opportunity (along with a long-time friend) to purchase an additional 12 Lee’s Famous Recipe restaurants in the Dayton area, bringing our total to 13 restaurants and 260+ employees. Today I do payroll for our company, Far Hills Development LLC, which includes Far Hills Catering. This year our company was named “Franchise of the Year” by Lee’s Famous Recipe.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

In 2015 my son started doing Tough Mudders (obstacles course challenges). In November 2016, he ran in his first World’s Toughest Mudder in Las Vegas… a 24 hour obstacle course race. He completed 50 miles and ran for over 21 hours straight!! His bib had a tracking number and from home we tracked his progress thru the night. He was truly an inspiration that he kept going and going, thru pain and fatigue. It made me think… I want to experience a Tough Mudder with him. I had seen the 6 week New You Challenge on Facebook before, and in December, there it was on my news feed again. I knew if I was going to do a Tough Mudder in June, I had to do something to get in shape and lose some weight. I joined the first 6 week challenge, did a second 6 weeks and then became a member.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

Since January I have lost 25 lbs, countless inches… and I completed my first Tough Mudder Half in June. 5 miles / 13 obstacles… it was an incredible time shared with my son and daughter, my sister and her son, my nephew and his wife and many of their friends. My new goal is a full Tough Mudder in June 2018. 10 miles / 20 obstacles. I definitely need to work on my upper body strength.

What is your favorite movement?

I really just enjoy all the different workouts…. from rowing to box jumps to attempting all the different weightlifting movements.

What is your least favorite movement?

That darn bike… and “superman” hold… ugh!!!

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

I have more than one:

  • “I don’t quit when I’m tired. I quit when I’m done.”
  • “The pain you feel today will be the strength you feel tomorrow.”
  • “Push yourself…because no one else is going to do it for you.”
  • “Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t do.” (Rikki Rogers)

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

Just do it!!! It may be totally out of your comfort zone, as it was for me. And it is hard work… but the results are so worth it. Truly… LIFE CHANGING!!!!!!

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

Working up a good sweat (seriously). The women in our group are every shape and size, yet we are all the same… sharing one goal. Be better than you were yesterday. The coaches and staff are great… super supportive and encouraging. Centerville CrossFit makes working out challenging and fun!

I am… totally shocked to be selected for this… I feel super honored!

I like… learning new things, being outside, loving on animals, cooking, laughing, fast cars, craft beer…. and kettle chips!

I dislike… being late, slow drivers, snakes and kale.

I eat… a plant-based diet. I eat a lot, and often, and then I eat again.

I will… try to stay positive, no matter what.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I was born and raised in the Dayton area and 95% of my family are in the area too. I’m an only child but have quite a large family – they’re great and I’m super lucky. I got married last year (Jeff), have two step-kiddos (Jess & Alex) and a Yorkie named Layla, who’s the love of my life (sorry hubs!). I love to cook and to share food with anyone and everyone. I also love to be outside for any reason – especially for bonfires! I went to UD (Go Flyers!) and graduated with a Business Admin and Communications degree. I’ve worked at Ball Aerospace supporting WPAFB for almost seven years. I am a Research Coordinator at AFRL working with a group that researches the human visual system. Animals are my true passion/love and if I could do it all over again I’d probably become a veterinarian. I’m also super into reading/learning about nutrition and would love to have a food/cooking blog.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

I have always done some form of exercise but started to feel like I was losing motivation and was no longer seeing results. I saw the advertisement for the six week New You Challenge at Centerville CrossFit and thought I would give it a try. Needless to say, I loved it and joined after completing the six weeks. I’m looking forward to taking my fitness to the next level, and beyond, with CrossFit.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

I’ve only been a full-fledged member for about two months now but so far I’ve learned a lot and one of my immediate goals was to get over any apprehension about learning unknown movements. Prior to CrossFit, I had never done any Olympic lifting or gymnastics-type work and learning those movements has been both challenging and fun. I have many goals for the future; some of which are to be able to do strict pull-ups, rope climbs, and string together double-unders, to get over my fear of box jumps, and to maybe someday take part in the open.

What is your favorite movement?

Deadlifts and squats.

What is your least favorite movement?

Push-ups.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” ~Gandhi

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

For those thinking about joining: Seriously, just do it. It’s hard work but it’s so much stinking fun and it makes you feel like a million bucks. For new members: Don’t be intimidated or worry about what you CAN’T do. Focus on what you CAN do and work your tail off. There is no better feeling than completing a WOD, knowing you pushed yourself harder than before, and having that feeling of accomplishment! Here’s to fist bumps, sweat angels and Fran lung!

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

My favorite thing about Centerville CrossFit is the community. I honestly did not know what to expect and I have been so incredibly and pleasantly surprised. All the coaches, staff, and members go out of their way to make you feel included. The coaches are supportive, helpful and encouraging – they always make you feel good about what you can do and give you the confidence to do more and more each day. The members are welcoming and I already feel like I have many new friends. The energy within the community is infectious. It’s such a positive place to be – it absolutely makes me better.

I am… a son, husband, father, magistrate judge, CrossFitter and Christian.

I like… to dance and make people smile.

I dislike… frogs. C’mon people let’s be real, they’re disgusting… and that bulging neck thing they do is gross.

I eat… clean. Meaning I clean any and everything off of my plate.

I will… be better today, than I was yesterday.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I grew up in Cincinnati. After graduating from Lakota West High School, I received a football scholarship to Georgetown College and was captain of a two-time national championship team. I went to law school and began my career as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Montgomery County where I would meet my beautiful wife, Janna Parker. Upon leaving, and spending some time in private practice, I was recently appointed as a Magistrate Judge in Montgomery County Juvenile Court. Janna and I have two amazing daughters (Zoe, 2 – going on 13) and (Maya, 1). We attend Southbrook Christian Church but Sundays are a struggle since Janna was born and raised in Pittsburgh and I’m from Cincinnati. WHO-DEY!!!

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

My wife back in 2011 wanted to check it out. We had already been members of another gym and chose to officially join CCF around February 2012. The workouts were/are about as close as the workouts I did in college and it’s safe to say Janna and I are gluttons for punishment.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

There have been so many over the years which come with being a part of this gym. I would like to eventually snatch 225 (I have gotten so close).

What is your favorite movement?

Snatch. When you come out of that “hole” with the bar above your head you look and feel like a BOSS!

What is your least favorite movement?

Snatch. When you fail to come out of that “hole” without the bar above your head you look and feel like…NOT A BOSS!

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

My defensive coordinator in college once said: “One of the hardest things to do in life is your best, when average will get the job done.”

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

For new members, you’ll never workout the same way and get the same results, nor should you in my humble opinion.

For someone thinking about joining CrossFit, I routinely hear the same three things, such as:

  1. “I need to get in shape first” –  Frankly, you won’t.
  2. “I can’t do those movements”  – I know, our amazing coaches will personally teach you how to do them or modify it.
  3. “I don’t want people looking at me” – Ain’t nobody got time for that, because they’re too busy pushing themselves as far and as hard as they can go.

Just show up before you come up with a fourth reason.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

Centerville CrossFit is one of the best gyms and Mitch Lyons is one of the best coaches in the Miami Valley area (and beyond). His assistant coaches fall under his amazing leadership. We (emphasis on “We”) are a very supportive group, where everyone is pushing everyone to be the best that they can be at that particular moment of a WOD. But the best part is, once you leave CCF, you basically have no choice but to be the best that you can be in other areas of your life.

FB_IMG_1488030346157I am… so humbled to be have been selected! I love reading everyone’s journey and story within CrossFit! It changes lives!

I like… meeting new people! Everyone has a story!

I dislike… judgmental people or not being open minded.

I eat… way more than I did a few months ago! Working with Mitch to go from 900-1000 calories per day to 2400 calories per day with the right MACRO’S to enable me to best the best I can be! There needs to be a class as young women we take to fully understand you are what you eat and that starving yourself or quick fixes accomplish nothing!

I will… continue to come to class and get better every day!

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I have been in banking for over 30 years and enjoy helping business owners find a way to make their dreams and passions a reality. After raising two kids, that now are both married, it was time to find Rhonda again. I read really fast and I wish that tool helped me in my everyday life but the only thing that it has done is to enable me to read books faster. I have completed 2 half marathons and several 5K but I still don’t consider myself a runner. I am now a grandma of 4 month old Ember Rose and as much as I love my kids, my love for her is just completely different. I am engaged to be married to the love of my life on May 28th and so thankful he supports my fitness love. After work and after I work out in the morning, I do personal training in the evenings with taking workouts to people’s homes. It has been such a journey to be able to share my love of working out with others and how it can change your life.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

I had been working out at the Y, then a group class, and with a personal trainer. My trainer worked out at Centerville CrossFit and I came in to get a gift certificate for her and told Heather at the desk that I was so intrigued by CrossFit but I wasn’t in good enough shape to come myself. She said just come in and try a free class or two and see what you think! I was hooked from day 1. It was the challenge I was looking for and the support system I needed. Everyone has always spoken about the CrossFit community and you will never believe how great it is until your experience it!

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

I consider everything I am working on as a goal since I have to modify.  I feel like I am a long way from when I first started and I cried when I held the bar against my throat for a front squat. I have achieved a deadlift of 185# with 200 # in my sights.  New goals of toes to bar and a pull up.

What is your favorite movement?

Deadlifts and thrusters. I love the feel of rowing and how it works the whole body.

What is your least favorite movement?

Burpees. It’s a love/hate relationship. The days of doing just a few to several is the new norm!

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

My dad passed away with Alzheimer’s in 2010 at the age of 68. He always told us growing up that “ You can’t get finished until you get started”.   I think about that phrase often when I am struggling finishing something and the hardest part is usually just getting started.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

The end of March I will be 53 years old. If I can do it… then anyone can at least try it! It is intimating to come into a CrossFit gym and some days I still feel that way. But everything is scaled your fitness level and everyone is there to help you!

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

It takes me about 42-45 minutes to drive to class before work. If I didn’t completely love it I could easily have stopped! But the people I have met, the support from the staff especially Jen, Spencer and Mitch, the notes of encouragement easily make up for that! I needed to get out of my comfort zone and I am not sure I will ever get the lingo down but I am always ready to get started!
