2018 June: Tim Wilson

By: Centerville CrossFit Leave a Comment

I am…. Blessed with an awesome, supportive wife and two incredible kids
I like
…warm weather (finally here!), coffee, Saturdays in the summer, and routine
I dislike… February in Ohio, sharks and snakes, and week 5 of the open generally speaking
I eat… much different than when I began this journey. Have subscribed to counting macros and it has opened my eyes to the type of fuel and nutrition your body needs. Also allows so much more freedom than anything I’ve tried to this point.
I will… open up when prompted but am not nearly as social as my wife. CCF has helped me in this regard greatly, so many awesome people.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc… I am 32, live in Centerville, and work for an insurance & finance company out of Wisconsin.   I have a son Charlie, age 4 and a daughter Kate, age 1 (going on 13) and am married to Amanda, who joined CCF last June. I like to play golf but do a lot less now that CCF is a part of my life. We love to travel as well and have tried to get better at committing to do so.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general? I was introduced to CrossFit by a friend who organized a drop-in class as part of a bachelor party. On the flight home, I googled CrossFit gyms, saw CCF was close to my home and signed up for the elements course. I came to this place with a history of wasted gym memberships, bad habits, poor physical health, and waning motivation. Something clicked once I started and as a result, CCF has impacted my life more dramatically than I ever could have imagined.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones? My first official CCF workout was “FRAN” . It took me 17 Minutes with a scaled thruster, doing banded pull-ups while the coach physically pushed me up over the bar. Every time I see Fran on the schedule it’s an opportunity to see how far I’ve come….So this past month I finished in 4:35 RX. It’s not anything to print on a shirt, but it’s the most tangible evidence I have, besides photos, to show where I started and where I am now.
New Goals are to continue to make progress. Complete the open and improve my standing, focus on my weaknesses, and continue to show up and work.

What is your favorite movement? I am a fan of anything gymnastics related… if it’s on the bar, sign me up.

What is your least favorite movement? I continue to have a love/hate with double-unders. They seem to come and go. The best advice I have received around hating movements is that I should try to make the ones I hate, my absolute favorites. Tell yourself you love them. Sounds counterintuitive, but I promise it works.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by? “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining? Do not be intimidated by what you have seen or heard. This place will meet you exactly where you are in your journey. I have benefited greatly from both the physical training and the mental and emotional support the culture and people here provide. This community is unlike any other, take a chance, you will not regret it.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit? The coaches, the members, the culture and the standard of excellence.

I am… a dad, a husband, a nerd, and a little confused to have been chosen for this.
I like… movies, naps, science, nature, and dogs.
I dislike… waiting and seafood.
I eat… pretty well, but I have a weakness for ice cream and my 2 year old loves to shove goldfish crackers in my mouth.
I will… keep pushing to get better, and maybe someday try competing.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…
I got my PhD in Chemistry from Texas A&M last spring, and have been working at AFRL as a National Research Council Fellow since last June. I did triathlon and played water polo before taking some time off from sports to focus on grad school, and I just generally like being outdoors and biking, running, hiking… I can get into pretty much anything active.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?
I started grad school just after completing an Ironman, and was training 20+ hours per week for triathlon. I was able to keep it up for about 7 months before I found myself very sick from being so overtrained. I decided that I couldn’t continue to do both things at the level that I wanted, so grad school took priority. I kept running and swimming inconsistently, and finished last spring overweight and out of shape. I was sick of having a dad bod, and in looking for something new to try I found CrossFit.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?
I recently got handstand pushups and hit 200 lbs for my clean and jerk. Goals are to keep getting stronger and get some muscle ups.

What is your favorite movement?
Gymnastic movements, rowing, running

What is your least favorite movement?
Double unders, and doesn’t everyone hate burpees?

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?
Take a break… eat a cookie.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?
Just try it. There’s something here for everyone, and you’ll never find a more supportive group of coaches and members.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?
I’m not very outgoing, so it’s been amazing to be welcomed in by the community that we have here at CCF. Everyone that I have met from the coaches to the athletes have just been great people all around. The way everyone accepts my maniac daughter running around after class on the weekends is awesome.

Teresa BradenI am…. grateful for all I have

I like… people. And sleep. And coffee.

I dislike… celery, racism, and getting dressed up.

I eat… lean meats, more and more veggies. And coffee.

I will… keep getting better at everything I try.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…
I’ve worked for 27 years as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. I’m employed at SOIN medical center. My main hobby is CrossFit of course but I spend a great deal of time volunteering at my church.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?
I found Centerville CrossFit from the New you challenge back in Sept 2016 in declining health and mental exhaustion. CrossFit gave me the exercise programming I hadn’t found before. Its been challenging, interesting and fun. CrossFit has kept me engaged unlike any other attempt at exercise I’ve tried before.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?
I’ve been able to dead lift 205 lbs which still sounds like a lot! I’ve almost graduated to “real” push ups. I’ve lost a good bit of weight and reinvented my life. I want to get pull ups this year and the dreaded double unders.

What is your favorite movement?
Power cleans, thrusters, deadlifts

What is your least favorite movement?
Double unders, snatches, running.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?
Everyone has a story-pay attention

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?
Don’t be intimidated by exercises that are new or hard. Find an inspiration and motivation that WORKS for you. Set goals that are achievable and then repeat.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?
People I’ve met who are so supportive. Everyone is so encouraging and keeps the hard classes from being too intimidating.

Jaymie PollakI am…. perpetually sore. I love it!
I like… funny t-shirts, British humor, traveling, books, music, airplanes, workouts that have ‘rests’ in them
I dislike… running, mayo, and the word ‘moist’
I eat… much better than I used to!
I will… see you at the gym tomorrow?

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…
I am a wife and a stay-at-home mom who likes to volunteer on a regular basis with charitable organizations. I am a singer in a band and currently take classical voice lessons. I love traveling, adventure, and I’m never afraid to try new things.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?
After moving back to Dayton from London, England with my family, my diet and exercise routine had gone by the wayside. I was tired, depressed, and unhealthy. In September 2016, I saw an ad on Facebook one night for the New You Challenge, and signed up. I even kept it a secret from my husband for awhile because I was worried that he would think CrossFit was too extreme for me. (Obviously he didn’t, because he’s a member of CCF now, too.) After the rude awakening of my first New You class (I almost threw up), I wondered if I made the right decision. I finished two New You sessions and never looked back. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?
When I first started, one of my first goals was to be able to run around the building one time! I’ve come a long way since then. I’ve hit numerous weightlifting PRs; hitting a 200 pound back squat was a recent achievement. Surviving a mock weightlifting competition was another. My new goals are getting that first pull-up and climbing that darn rope.

What is your favorite movement?
Clean and jerk. I feel like I learn something with every new attempt.

What is your least favorite movement?
Overhead squats.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?
“Have a good time, all the time.” — Viv Savage, Spinal Tap

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?
DO IT. Just get yourself to the gym, three times a week. Make good food choices. The rest will fall into place.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?
I love that I can go to a class any time of day and I will have a coach that can scale a WOD so I can complete a great workout. I love the positive atmosphere and camaraderie amongst athletes and coaches. Life can be hard, but having a great ‘box’ sure does help. 🙂

I am…. very passionate and maybe a little too competitive 😉
I like… dancing, horror movies and being in the woods or on the open ocean.
I dislike… the word “silly”, meatloaf, and when I completely botch a workout.
I eat… very clean and strict mostly, but I would eat cupcakes everyday if I could!
I will… absolutely never give up on my goals.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…
I own Performance Gymnastics Academy in Kettering, so that keeps me very very busy! My competitive team girls have my whole heart. Whenever I do have time off, I pack up my two little dachshunds and we head back down South to the Carolinas to see family and friends!

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and Crossfit in general?
I was recommended to try Crossfit by a coach friend of mine because of my gymnastics background. I tried a few gyms in the area, but I fell in love with the atmosphere and people of CCF from the first class I took.

What goals have you achieved and what are your new ones?
I was insanely excited to get a ring muscle-up and to clean #135! My new goals are to just get a lot better at lifting, try a competition and work my way into the Advanced Group 🙂

What is your favorite movement?
Anything that is strictly body weight and/or involves gymnastic movements! haha!

What is your least favorite movement?
Snatches… good gracious they may be the death of me!

What is your favorite quote or words to live by:
“Get on your knees and pray, then get on your feet and work”

Do you have any advice to any new members or someone thinking about joining?
This is the greatest type of workout I’ve done since I was a college gymnast. I love that we are always learning and getting better every week. Not only is it great for physical fitness, but it is my stress reliever and one of my absolute favorite things to do. No matter your background, just get in and try it! I promise you will love it! Plus, at CCF we are a family and a support system.

What do you love about Centerville Crossfit?
The passion and knowledge of the coaches. Everyday they motivate me to push harder than I thought I could. I look forward to going to workout every single day. I am so grateful for CCF and all the people in it. Y’all are the best!!!

I am…probably overthinking this because I am so surprised to be chosen for this.

I like…learning new things, watching Netflix and reading a good book.

I dislike… well…I am not going to tell you because in my experience it usually results in my dislikes being used against me.

I eat…what I want as long as Mitch approves.

I will…be going back to school within the next couple of months, which I am absolutely terrified and excited for.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…
I recently graduated from UD and while I have been trying to figure out the next step in my life, I have been working in a lab doing chemical testing.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?
I had been interested in starting crossfit for a few years but was never brave enough to start. So my mom found an advertisement for the New You Challenge – which I had no desire to join – but my mom wanted to give it a chance and I joined it with her so she would not have to do it alone. Needless to say, I am hooked and have not looked back.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?
I didn’t know I had a goal of doing a handstand, until Spencer made me try it one class – now all I want to do is do handstands.
My current goals are to be able to do a strict pull-up and gain more confidence in overhead movements.

What is your favorite movement?
The clean – for sure, but I also like a lot of the weightlifting movements.

What is your least favorite movement?
Anything I am not good at, but particularly BURPEES. I am not graceful enough to fling myself onto the ground and get back up again quickly – though I am getting better.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?
I don’t really have a favorite quote or words to live by, but I hear this very frequently — Consistency is key.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?
Just do it, you will not regret it.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?
I love the community and the support system that is found at Centerville Crossfit. Everyone wants each other to succeed and they push you to reach your fullest potential and go further.

I am…. always late to the gym
I like… coffee, SQUATS, mimosas
I dislike… the triple jump
I eat… all the donut cake
I will… work hard

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?
I used to work right by the gym and I would drive past CCF about 4 times/day and I was curious. I started with boot camp classes because I didn’t even understand what CrossFit was but a couple months later I started CF and have never looked back.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?
I have achieved so much physically and mentally in the last 6 years at CCF. I found confidence and strength and I realized that with hard work and consistency I could accomplish any goals I set for myself. I started from the bottom with all movements and I have accomplished most of them that I have put in the time to work on. After having a baby a year and a half ago I had to kind of start over again from the ground up in many ways, which has been humbling for me but mostly I battle with time and consistency and often I don’t feel like an “athlete.” But it has been incredible to see what my body can do in the gym before, during and after a pregnancy! My current goal is to stay consistent in the kitchen and the gym.

What is your favorite movement?
Thrusters. Duh.

What is your least favorite movement?
Running. It always reminds me just how much I hate running.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?
My favorite quote:“Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.” George S. Patton

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?
DO IT.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?
Everything. Walking in the door to CCF was honestly the best thing I have ever done.

I am….a meat head, who is good at picking things up and putting them back down.

I like…working out, eating, and sleeping. Everything else is just waiting to do those things.

I dislike…driving in the snow and having to do yardwork, luckily I only have to deal with one at time…and shirts!

I eat…pretty much everything. You don’t get to be this big by skipping meals. I try to eat healthy but occasionally my diet gets away from me.

I will…happily give assistance to anyone who asks for it.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

Originally from Los Angeles CA, I moved here when I was a young child. For the record, I am still a young child and I moved here like 5 years ago.   I played offensive line at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and now am a Captain in the Air Force and a Physicist by trade. Currently, I am working to get my PhD in applied physics at the Air Force Institute of Technology (like right now! I am filling this out at work.) I also coach high school football at Fairborn High School. Outside of my two jobs and the gym, there is not a whole lot of time but I usually spend it watching TV or playing games.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?

I was told there would be cake. But seriously, I miss the intensity and competition that I used to have every day while playing football. This does a decent job filling that void, like no other workout regime.

Centerville Crossfit is the best gym in the area, especially for those who want to play the sport of crossfit.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

I never thought I would be able to do muscle ups or handstand pushups and I am amazed every time I flip upside down and find that I can do them.

My current goal is to help the CCF team make regionals this season, that’s all I am focusing on!

What is your favorite movement?

Rowing, it’s one of the few movements where it helps to be tall

What is your least favorite movement?

Chest to bar pull-ups

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

“Perfection is the enemy of greatness.” No one is perfect, everyone is gonna make mistakes, that doesn’t stop you from being great.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

I think everyone will like Crossfit once they try it, so don’t be intimidated by the people you see on TV or Instagram, we think they are freaks too.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

Mitch Lyons’ famous hugs

Complete the sentence:

I am… ME, confident, strong, a wife, and a mother

I like… coffee, challenges, dark chocolate, all things pumpkin

I dislike… loud noises, crowded places, clutter and disorganization, being idle, and talking about myself

I eat… pretty healthy.

I will… eventually have that corner office!

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I have two awesome kids. You probably have met my son at one of the evening classes. My daughter plays soccer.   I have also been married for 15 years to Mike Conner.

I spent some time in the USAF as a B-52 crew chief and a maintenance coordinator, followed that with a brief stint in advertising and then as an emergency dispatcher. I am now a Program Manager and the Business Team Lead at the University of Dayton Research Institute.

I don’t really have a whole lot of hobbies outside of Crossfit. I enjoy reading and am getting ready to go back to school to get my MBA. I enjoy learning and challenging myself.

What brought you to Centerville Crossfit and CrossFit in general?

Before Crossfit, I had run multiple half marathons and one marathon, always looking to change it up, I did a Warrior Dash then decided to do a Tough Mudder. It was during training for the Tough Mudder in 2011 that I discovered Crossfit and found Centerville Crossfit was right around the corner.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

Double unders were my nemesis. It took me 2 painful years to string them together and now I can do 150ub.

A 200lb jerk would be pretty cool and being able to do muscle ups on ALL the rings, not just the ones off the rig.

What is your favorite movement?

Power Cleans, Jerks, double unders

What is your least favorite movement?

Burpees, thrusters, wall balls…..I can’t pick just one

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

My favorite words to live by are from the guy who used to stand at the corner of 48 and Alex-Bell on Mondays holding a motivational sign, they are“Those Who Risk – Win”. Another one of my favorites is “What is the worst that could happen?”

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

Just give it a chance. The beauty about Crossfit is that anyone can do it, no matter the age or capability.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

The coaches and the community are the best. I have met some awesome people and made some great friends at Centerville Crossfit.

I am… so glad I started doing CrossFit!

I like… wine and chocolate and traveling to places that have wine & chocolate (I see Italian wine and chocolate gelato in the near future). I like it when the coaches play music I’ve heard of.

I dislike… shopping. Losing weight this year has forced me to go shopping a lot and that’s not fun at all, but it’s fun wearing smaller sizes. I also dislike it when my kids don’t want to hear about what I did at my workout…but I tell them anyway.

I eat… anything I want on Friday and Saturday nights; having that to look forward to keeps me on track the rest of the week.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

My husband, Dave (just joined CCF), and I have 3 kids in their 20’s who all live in Columbus; the youngest attends OSU. I work at WPAFB.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

I was looking for something to do during the week that would also improve my health. Then last September a friend asked me to do the “New You Challenge”. I was very skeptical after I saw online what people do at CrossFit. I thought you had to be in good shape before starting CrossFit and I was too old, too out of shape, too overweight and thought I may get injured trying to do those things. I had an LA Fitness membership but I just couldn’t ever get motivated to go so I decided to try CrossFit.

What goals have you achieved?

I wanted to be able to do a sit-up, get up off the floor easier, and go up and down stairs easier…very basic things. I can easily do all those now. I got a lot stronger, lost 5.5% body fat and 24 pounds in the past 5 months (after “doing the food” part). My blood work #’s also improved a lot due to a good diet and exercise…without any medication.

What are your new ones?

I want to lose more body fat, deadlift my body weight and do a Double Under…just one…no need to overdo it!

What is your favorite movement?

Anything I’m doing now that I couldn’t do a year ago. I couldn’t jump rope, do a sit-up, box jump or a burpee. In recent workouts I did 120 sit-ups, jump roped 450 times, did lots of burpees and did my 1st box jump. So those are my favorite movements (except for the box jump).

What is your least favorite movement?

The bike & anything with the bar that you have to get your elbows up (mine won’t go up).

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

I don’t really have a favorite quote but here’s one I hear a lot: “Go home, eat a meal (not just a protein shake), drink plenty of water (not bourbon), and get plenty of sleep”.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

It doesn’t matter what your starting condition is or how old you are, you just start from wherever you are and get better. Yes, it’s hard. But if working hard just 3 hours a week makes every other hour in the week easier, then it’s definitely worth it. If you keep at it, you’ll see positive changes in all aspects of your life.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

I love the people, the coaches and learning new skills. I like how my coach encourages me to try new skills but also makes sure I’m not going to do anything to hurt myself. I like being around the positive, energetic people here and love how everyone is so supportive of each other no matter what your level is.
