I am… a snowboarder, a trail runner, and a Gingerimg_2869

I like… Colorado, my Harley, shopping, and old country music.

I dislike… heights and bugs

I eat… mostly organic, lots of meat, lots of veggies, and sometimes chocolate & Jeni’s ice cream

I will… always be grateful

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I moved to Centerville from Cincinnati about a year and a half ago to open the new Whole Foods Market. I am the Assistant Store Leader and have been with them for 7 years. My wife and I started at CCF just over a year ago. We have been married for 3 years. I get crazy ideas for a new adventure and she is always on board. We set goals together and provide one another with support and accountability. It’s an awesome feeling to hit your wall during a long run or want to give up on something and your partner knows exactly what to say to motivate you to keep going.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

I got back into running and starting cycling about 5 years ago. Even though I was racking up the miles in both, I wasn’t seeing much improvement in my speed. I also had no upper body strength and I was starting to get a little bored with my same routine. I felt like I was working hard but not seeing any results. I came to CrossFit wanting to see results for my hard work.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

  • I have managed to shave 2+ mins off my mile, completed my first Duathlon, and I am 25 pounds lighter!
  • I am still working on my skills on the rig. TTB and pull ups and just getting better all-around at CrossFit
  • I also want to complete an Ironman 70.3 in 2017 and my first full Trail Marathon

What is your favorite movement?

Front Squats

What is your least favorite movement?

Snatches and DUs

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

People who love and really care about you, do not accept you for who you are. They set you to a higher standard and expect only the best out of you.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

I had the misconception that I needed to get in shape before I joined CrossFit. That isn’t true at all. You get in shape doing CrossFit as long as you are willing to put in the work.

Also, I found CrossFit very intimidating at first. I wouldn’t come to certain classes if I couldn’t do a movement. I was worried there wouldn’t be a modification or I would do something wrong. I would compare what I couldn’t do, to what others could do. You have to learn to accept where you are and just try to get better every day. Working beside other athletes that are better than you, makes you stronger.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

The coaches. They push me to work harder and move faster. They know my skill level and know when I can be doing more. It is also a great community. I have met some awesome people through CCF. I also love the person I am becoming since I joined CCF!

I am… blessed to be married to my best friend.

I like… Oregon Duck Football, John Deere, and Mexican food.

I dislike… vegetables (yes I am like a five year old)

I eat… almost everything but broccoli, cauliflower, and squash.

I will… try to be a better version of myself every day.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I grew up in a small farming town in the Thumb of Michigan of about 500 people. You wouldn’t know it by looking at me but I was All-State in cross country in high school. I joined the Army out of high school for four years and went on to the University of Toledo. I work as a project manager for a construction company, currently building delivery stations for Amazon. My wife and I have traveled a lot in the last five years but we have found a home in the Dayton area.

My hobbies include college football (Go Ducks!!), playing video games, CrossFit, and trying new restaurants with my wife.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

I found CrossFit through a friend back home. He was really into it and was always pushing me to come workout with him and focus on eating better. After about four months of being pushed, I started working out with him. We obviously didn’t know anything about programming. It was basically strength training and whatever my friend could come up with to make us sweaty and out of breath. There are no CrossFit affiliates within an hour of my home town so it was the best we had.

I had moved to Dayton for a new job and went back to not working out again. I knew I needed a push. I pass Centerville CrossFit everyday on my way to work and after two months of being scared to walk in I stopped by on my lunch break to check it out. I met Mitch right when I walked in. He showed me around, explained the classes, and I could tell this place was different. I signed up for the intro as soon as I got back to my computer. I have been hooked ever since. I tell people CrossFit is the most awful thing I have ever been in love with.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

My first goal was just to finish every workout and not quit no matter what, this still is my goal every day.

My future goals are to complete “Murph” as prescribed, back squat 400 lbs., be able to complete 50 double unders in a row.

What is your favorite movement? Heavy Back Squats

What is your least favorite movement? Burpees

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

“Hard work beats talent because talent doesn’t work hard.” – Tim Tebow

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

My advice to anyone thinking about joining is have faith in yourself and jump in with both feet. You will be amazed what you can accomplish. Don’t compare yourself to everyone around you, compare yourself to who you were yesterday. The best part is when you struggle, the other members will pick you up and push you forward.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

The coaches and the community atmosphere. The coaches are fantastic and always push me harder than I would ever push myself. I have learned a lot in my short time because of them. I have had multiple coaches even if they aren’t teaching the class come by and encourage me and give me tips. They really care about each person and it really shows.

The fellow members are always supportive and help encourage me when I feel like I can’t push forward. On the days when I am behind and struggle with a workout, there are always multiple members that stay around after they are done to make sure I finish and cheer me on. It says a lot about a place that has those kind of people as members.

I am… blessed to have a beautiful supportive wife, a 2 year old son that thinks my jokes are funny, and the physical health to be able to come here and push myself everyday.

I like… ice cream a lot, the L.A. Dodgers, OSU football, grabbing the first tee time on a Saturday in the fall, and any place in NW Michigan in the summer.

I dislike… 5k rows, February weather in Ohio, and trying to park at the Greene.

I eat… mostly Paleo but mix in the occasional carb or weekend ice cream.

I will… use what I’ve learned these last few months to impact my lifestyle indefinitely.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

  • I work for a real estate title company in Dayton. I started with them in January of this year. I spent the two years prior traveling pretty extensively for my job and so this transition has been a great opportunity to stay in Dayton and put down stronger roots in the community.
  • My hobbies have changed a lot since joining Centerville CrossFit. I try to get here as much as I can. I have taken up swimming and run on my off days. Apart from the occasional round of golf, I spend the bulk of my free time with my wife Amanda and 2 year old son, Charlie.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

Sports and exercise have always been a bonus for me of sorts. I was born with a heart defect that required surgery and my prospects for any kind of serious sports were or physical activity were pretty limited. Rather than hold me back, my parents encouraged me to push myself. The thought process from an early age in our house was less about waiting and seeing and more, “why not be the first.”   I lived by the verse “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. That theme carried on and has been my saving grace. I’m in somewhat uncharted waters in terms of my heart condition and what comes next. No one has really gotten to this point age wise without additional surgery. Staying active has been the key to that. Each day is a gift and CrossFit has opened new challenges that I’m excited to pursue.

I discovered CrossFit through a friend convincing me to attend a drop in class at a gym in Austin, TX. We were there for a bachelor party Memorial Day weekend this year. I Googled CrossFit gyms near our home the next day and had my three intro courses completed by that next weekend. Something just clicked. I played sports competitively through my freshmen year of college but allowed some injuries and life to get in the way of my physical health. I would join gyms, wander aimlessly for a few weeks, and stop going. Centerville CrossFit gave me the direction and guidance I really need combined with some healthy competition, even just with myself. I can’t say for sure that I would have had the same experience at another gym. I have visited a few while traveling since joining here and I have instant realization as to how good we have it. The coaches, the culture, the facility, the members, all combine for an unparalleled experience and sense of community. I have a long way to go, but I constantly feel challenged to improve, push limits, and pursue growth.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

  • Early on, the goal was just to improve my physical condition. So literally going from completing 2 total pull-ups in my Intro course, to now completing a WOD feels like a huge win.
  • My first class ever was “Fran” which I did in 16+ minutes. Near the end of August, I finished “Fran” in 8:58. Not an impressive time, but really cool to see that tangible improvement.
  • I completed the Chicago Triathlon in August, which could never have done prior to joining. Setting a goal for time and hitting it was big for me. I just want to continue to push my boundaries physically and be able to handle all prescribed weights and movements each class.

What is your favorite movement?

I love power cleans. I was fairly new to Olympic lifts and my form was terrible. This lift really presented the most challenges so getting it right (when I do), feels really rewarding.

What is your least favorite movement?

Front rack lunges. Just try to get them over with.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

  • “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” Martin Luther King Jr.
  • “And now, Lord, What will I wait for? My hope is You” – Psalm 39:7

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

  • You will not find a more comfortable, accepting environment anywhere – and yet you will be challenged like never before.
  • My advice would be to a) be a sponge, accept coaching, b) focus on form first – get that right before you try to stretch yourself weight wise, c) push your limits – it will surprise you what you are capable of if you challenge yourself. Lastly, just be here. Showing up is the hardest part at first but is so critical to gaining some momentum and seeing results.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

  • The coaches are incredible people. They have pushed me tremendously and been the critical factor behind the gains I have realized. The members are great and with the coaches, have created an amazing culture of acceptance and community. Very cool to be a part of it and to have been welcomed with open arms.
  • This group is serious about fitness and whole body health. It’s a lifestyle commitment, mentally and physically that challenges you on a daily basis.

DSC OLY MEETI am… Bernie. I am a daughter, sister to one, aunt to two, an OG of LDS

I like… dogs, beer, Cheez-its, dancing my face off, brunch, mimosas with just a splash of OJ

I dislike… people who think they’re better than everyone else

I eat… what Coach tells me to

I will… do the best that I can to excel at whatever I try

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I am 24. I have lived in Ohio my whole life. I am a proud Ohio University alumna. I am currently a student at Sinclair in the Physical Therapy Assistant program and I work as an Exercise Specialist at a private owned physical therapy clinic, Ortho Advantage. Outside of the gym, I enjoy getting weird at Ned Pepper’s, exploring different breweries around town, talking with LDS, and spending time with my family.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

I learned about CrossFit from my friend in college at Ohio University, and she said I would love it. Well, she was right. So I became a member at Crossfit SEO in Athens, OH. When I graduated and moved back home, CCF was the only CrossFit gym I had heard of. I checked it out and thought the space was awesome, and the coaches were so nice. I’ve never looked back.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

I wanted to get a muscle up so bad ever since I started CrossFit and finally did it this past October!

My new goals are to become better and more efficient at body weight/gymnastics movements.

What is your favorite movement?

Snatch

What is your least favorite movement?

Thrusters

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

  • Be brave. Be kind. Be wise.
  • Traps are the new tits.
  • “that’s the tits!”

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

If you’re tired of your same, boring workout at the globo gym, CrossFit is what you need.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

I love the family atmosphere. Whenever I have a bad day and working out is the last thing I want to do but drag my butt there anyway, I ALWAYS leave smiling from having such a great time! Everyone in there wants to see each other get better! No one will let a person finish a workout alone without helping him or her push to the end.

I am… a human, being.
I like… red wine 🙂
I dislike… negative criticism
I eat… a strict vegetarian diet + lots of chocolate
I will… compete this year and place

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…
Hobbies include fine art, spending time with my 2 shepherds, kayaking and gardening. I am a college grad who is crazy enough to go back for my MBA this year. I am an account manager at Lexis Nexis and am opening up my own business this spring. I am married with 3 fur babies and live right here in Centerville, Ohio.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

I played soccer and tennis in high school and became a runner after that. I stopped doing weights and ran 5-7 days a week for years. Injuries came shortly after so I needed a change. My roommate was doing CrossFit and he was getting results more quickly than what I was getting in years of only running. I went to 1 class that coach Spencer taught and was hooked. The CrossFit saga continues to this day. It will be 3 years this year.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

I’ve achieved unassisted pull-ups. I got 15 double-unders, once. I clean and jerked 100% body weight. Although still a work in progress, I achieved walking on my hands. Most importantly,  I achieved more self confidence. New goals include muscle ups, and competing this year and placing.

What is your favorite movement?FullSizeRender-4

Snatches and cleans

What is your least favorite movement?

Also snatches and cleans

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

All things are difficult before they are easy.

It’s not about falling, it’s about getting back up.

Success is not a skill, it is a persistent attitude.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

Ask yourself, “what is holding you back?” Your health is more important than any excuse you can think of. Do it for no one but yourself.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

The lack of intimidation of others in the box. When you walk in there, it is easy to feel that you are surrounded with like-minded people who have similar goals. The only intimidation there is, is what you’ve made up in your own head.

I am… old, but not dead yet.

I like… a good exhausting CrossFit workout or a nice long run in my two favorite cities for running, Columbus and Cincinnati.

I dislike… arrogance, pretentiousness, laziness, taking the easy way, complacency.

I eat… just about anything, that’s my problem. Texmex, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian–love it all.

I will… try to remember–>proud chest, proud chest, proud chest, dammit, proud chest!

Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…

I enjoy cycling on the local recreational trails. I also have a love/hate relationship with running. I love a good 10K run or a half marathon in an interesting locale. I love running in downtown Cincinnati or downtown Columbus. Yellow Springs is another fun place to run and hang out after the race is over. I do some trail running, but it beats my ankles and my knees half to death. I’ve done a few obstacle course races–Spartan Sprint, Warrior Dash, Battlefrog. I don’t do great at obstacle course races, but I will always finish.

What brought you to Centerville CrossFit and CrossFit in general?

After my father died from Type 2 diabetes, I knew I had to do something. I didn’t want to go down that road and I realized that I already had a big strike against me. I knew I had to get active.   I started out with cycling and running, but realized that I needed to add something. I just couldn’t see going the traditional gym route. I could see myself going once or twice, noodling around on the machines, getting bored, getting injured and then quitting, but still having to pay membership fees. CrossFit just seemed to offer something more, something extra, something different. CrossFit seemed to offer a challenge, and you really had to look inside yourself to see whether you were up to that challenge. Centerville CrossFit seemed to be the original and the best CrossFit gym in the area as far as I could tell from my research.

What goals have you achieved? What are your new ones?

For goals I’ve achieved, thanks to Coach Spencer’s Olympic weightlifting class, I’ve now achieved my goal to be more comfortable and less intimidated by Olympic weightlifting. I’m more confident with Olympic weightlifting. I still can’t lift a whole lot of weight, but I don’t cower from weightlifting like I used to. My new goals are pretty simple and straightforward. I want to do five strict, unbroken strict pull-ups and five double-unders.

What is your favorite movement?

Running. Wallballs. Rowing. They exhaust me, but I can hack ’em and they’re kind of fun.

What is your least favorite movement?

Wallwalks and handstand push-ups. Ugh. They hit my weakest areas.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

“Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must, just never give up.” Dean Karnazes.

“Fear is the mind killer” Frank Herbert.

Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining?

For someone thinking about joining, my advice would be think for yourself and make your own decision about whether CrossFit is right for you. Come to Centerville CrossFit and experience CrossFit done right. For new members, my advice would be that if you’re getting frustrated or not sure whether you’ll ever get the hang of CrossFit, stay with it. CrossFit is for everybody. I’m the living proof of that.

What do you love about Centerville CrossFit?

The people, especially the coaches. Everybody at Centerville CrossFit is nice, encouraging and positive. All the coaches were so very patient with me. Still are. What I especially appreciated was that the coaches didn’t take a “one size fits all” approach with me. I’m older than most folks at Centerville CrossFit. I don’t have an athletic background. I was always “kid picked last” for every team when I was young. The coaches at Centerville CrossFit recognized my limitations, but still worked with me, challenged me, and encouraged me,
